A Look At Yoga For Healing

By Faye Martins

In the modern world, people live in an almost permanent state of paradox. There is more technology and modern medicine than ever before, but there are also more people being unhappy and getting sick than ever before. Much of the technology and modern comforts we rely on actually can harm health. Luckily, there are some powerful methods people can use to reclaim their health. One of these methods is practicing yoga. Regular yoga practice will do wonders for a person's health. Here is a look at the benefits of yoga for healing.

Reducing Stress

One of the reasons so many people are suffering from illness these days is because of the extraordinary amounts of stress that most people are under. Research has shown that stress is one of the most harmful factors for a person's health. In order to prevent this, people must search for ways to reduce their stress levels by any means possible. Fortunately, practicing yoga is one of the most powerful tools for reducing stress. Anyone who is looking to feel better immediately will enjoy the stress-relieving benefits of yoga.

Boosting the Immune System

Research has shown that yoga will boost the strength of the immune system. When people practice yoga, it causes the body to release small amounts of nitric oxide into the bloodstream. This has the effect of dilating the blood vessels and stabilizing the immune system. Therefore, anyone who wants to avoid getting colds and flu should look into practicing yoga on a regular basis to keep their immune systems strong.

Change Heath on a Genetic Level

One of the best things about yoga is that it puts people into a meditative state. Scientists have conducted research that shows that people who meditate actually change their genes when they do it. Regular meditative practices will change the genes to reduce the inflammatory response of the body. This has the effect of making the body less stressed, and it also helps to prevent aging. Judging by this research, people who enjoy yoga will live longer, healthier and less stressful lives.

Eliminate Back Pain

People who suffer from back pain are well aware of how awful it can be. Back pain can completely eliminate the joy from life, making people bedridden and unable to leave their homes. For anyone who is suffering from back pain, it is imperative that they look into trying yoga. Doing yoga is one of the best ways to reduce back pain and bring back flexibility in the spine. Many people who could barely walk are able to walk with little or no pain within a few yoga sessions.

Reducing Blood Pressure

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US for both women and men. One of every four deaths that occur in the country is a result of heart disease. One of the leading causes of heart disease is high blood pressure, and it is easily treatable with some simple lifestyle changes. Practicing yoga is a great way to quickly reduce blood pressure. The physical activity in yoga is only part of the reason for this reduction in blood pressure. The deep breathing exercises performed in yoga are even more important, and these breathing exercises will help yoga practitioners to have lower blood pressure at all times.

By Dylan Flint

Over the last few years, people have grown more conscious to keep themselves fit than what were the situation decades ago. But most people have an unclear idea of what fitness is as they think that hitting the gym and lifting weights will do them a world of good. But traditional practices like yoga are also equally good and most importantly, safe.

There is no denying the fact that most of you see yoga as just a way of meditation, improving mental strength. Though this notion is absolutely correct, but in no way is yoga limited to meditation.

What is yoga?

As one of one the oldest and the most aesthetic form of fitness, yoga is derived from the Sanskrit term "Yuj" which translates as the union. • Hatha

• Jnana

• Karma

• Kundalini

• Yantra Yoga

Embracing this holistic approach to life will not only improve your health in a great way but also allow you peace of mind. The Western Civilization has accepted this fitness formula with open arms as everyone is aware of how beneficial yoga is. Though it has had its little tweaks like the invention of power yoga, the basic principles of this traditional exercise method has remained more or less unchanged. With its emphasis on improving the strength and flexibility of individuals, most modern gyms and fitness institutes have implemented it, and it is gaining more popularity with each passing day.

By Tabbu Verma

And some specific yoga programmes can treat a specific health problem that you might be suffering from quite a long time. Pelvic floor muscle excises also known as Kegel exercises are proved effective for Pelvic health and reducing mental stress in women. Researchers from the University of California, San Fransisco discovered a yoga training program that helps women gain more control over their urination and avoid accidental urine leakage.

The reasons why yoga is used for curing variety of health conditions like metabolic syndrome or pain syndromes are:

Yoga helps increase the mindful awareness
Yoga increases the relaxation
Relieves anxiety and stress

This is why, researchers feel that yoga could definitely help treat pelvic incontinence as well. As, the women who practiced the specific yoga-programme for 6 weeks experienced an overall 70 percent improvement of their pelvic incontinence. The frequency of their urine leakage decreased considerable when compared to the baseline.

Most of the women observed improvement in stress incontinence or urine leakage brought by activities that increases abdominal pressure such as coughing, sneezing and bending over.

Incontinence is associated with anxiety and depression, therefore yoga is believed to improve urinary incontinence through more than one mechanism. Yoga indulges in mindful awareness, meditation and relaxation. Hence, these mind activities can help reduce stress and improve the problem in women. Almost, 80 percent of women in their 40's and 50's suffer from this common problem, many young women also suffer from it. And regular practice of yoga can help women strengthen the pelvic muscle to prevent any urinary leakage by supporting the bladder.

Yoga exercises are specifically developed to improve the incontinence in women. These exercises were developed keeping older women in mind, so that it would be safe for them as well to perform yoga "asanas." It is widely used in Iyengar (a type of Hatha) yoga that can be modified for women of all ages. Some of the asanas that help treat incontinence in women includes:

Tadasana or Mountain Pose: Tadasana helps improve the posture of the body by increasing the flexibility of ankles, knees and hip joints. Tadasna strengthens the pelvic muscles, thereby preventing them from pelvic incontinence. Tadasana is popularly known for controlling the muscular movements.

Utkatasana (chair pose): this asana help in toning, stretching and strengthening the muscles of the urinary sphincter.

Moola Bandha (perineal contraction): It is an another exercise that tone up the muscles of the region between the anus and the genitals by repeated contraction, resulting in their improved functionality in stopping the involuntary flow of urine from the urinary bladder.

Viparita Karani (legs up the Wall pose): Viparita Karani is a wonderful yoga exercise that improves blood flow to the genitals. This exercise can be easily performed by lying on the bed and raising your legs up against the wall and allowing the blood to flow into your genitals.

Savasana ( corpse pose): After every asana, relax your body for 10 seconds, this is called savasana. You lay down of the floor and keep your hands and feet relaxed, with your palms touching the ground.

All types for yoga does not help in urinary incontinence. The aforementioned asanas are some of the specific asanas that directly address the pelvic problems. Yoga is an inexpensive and effective way to treat Pelvic incontinence as compared to traditional costly and time-intensive rehabilitation therapy.

Yoga to Solve Your Sleeping Problems

By Riky Lim

Every second echoes in heartbeat thumps and staccato white-water rivers of thoughts during sleepless, restless nights. Even keeping eyes closed is a struggle. Insomnia affects a lot of people.

There are medications, diets and habits to help a person sleep through the night. Sometimes, it just isn't enough. If you have tried prescriptions, drinking alcohol before bed, homeopathic remedies, and all the other ways people try to sleep, and there is still no blissful vacation in dreamland, maybe it's time to change the way you think about sleeping.

Sometimes, we just have to take the struggle out of trying to sleep. Add yoga to your bedtime routine. Not the yoga of human pretzels and head stand. This is soft, relaxing, soothing yoga. In bedtime routines, yoga slows down the body and mind by focusing on the breath and the release of tensions in the body and brain.

Read also : Yoga Helps You To Lower Your Stress Level

Guide your body to sleep; do not keep trying to force it. Use yoga to relax the body and mind, and get good sleep.

It is so easy to start doing. Forget teachers, classes and even a yoga mat. Find a comfy place, even your bed. Start doing a yoga session by sitting with your legs folded against each other in front of you. Observe your breath, feel the tension that has collected in the muscles.

Sync the mind and the body. Imagine your bum spreading on the floor like goo. Straighten your spine. Hold your head up high. Breathe in long, deep breaths. Push your belly out. Relax your rib cage. Expand your chest outwards, but try not to lift it up into your throat. This pose is safe and supportive, which tricks your body into relaxing.

Sometimes, the restless leg syndrome kicks in. Keep breathing. Your body gets part way to feeling amazing and wants to move, to revel in this new relaxation. Let it do what it wants.

Stretch forward in forward folds. Stretch to the sides. Stretch up. Stretch your legs forward and sideways. Breathe with every motion. Get deeply focused on making this easy. Make an effort to do less. If this sitting down yoga takes twenty minutes and at the end, you feel so sleepy, you almost fall asleep right there, score. Goal accomplished.

Your breath is really the key to yoga guiding your body and mind into deep, sweet sleep. As you get more relaxed, your body and mind may start to fight it. The thoughts start flying faster than ever. Your breathing oxygenate the blood, which is a good thing, for your lungs and heart and brain.

However, all the bad habits that are keeping you from releasing, relaxing and sleeping will want to use that extra oxygen to reinforce their agenda. Their agenda is to not let you sleep. Your body is telling you it wants action. So let it have some action.

This is the point when you can start moving into a flow of poses such as cat and cow, child's pose, and pigeon. These deceptively simple poses will massage the spine, encourage deeper breathing and give a deep stretch to the hips.

Control your movements and your breathing. Let your entire attention focus like a laser on what really matters in this moment; your comfort, your softness, your peace.
Isn't that nice? Now we are moving lightly, satisfying that restless leg syndrome.

Releasing are all those tight muscles which contribute to that restless leg feeling.

In a daytime yoga routine, you would move onto sun salutations to build strength and warmth so that you can have an energetic and productive day, but this is bedtime. Move onto the back. Let the spine, shoulders, rib cage and everything else spread wide on the floor.

Observe what is happening and use this time to find your breath again. The ultimate goal of yoga is to enter shavasana or corpse pose, in which the body lies flat on the back, arms at your sides, legs straight and palms face the ceiling.

This pose is a state of mind as well as a physical state. You may still feel some restlessness after moving to your back, so take your time. Remember, you want the body to want to relax. Follow its instincts and gently guide it into relaxation and sleepiness.

Take a few minutes right now to hug your legs towards your body, stretch them up and do some spinal twists. Stay in these poses for a long period of time, breathe deeper and quiet the mind even further.

Soon, you will find yourself gravitating towards the stillness of corpse pose. Discover yourself there; don't just order your body to do that pose.

Corpse pose is one of the hardest to get really good at. Don't worry about that. It is the easiest pose to get into. Lying flat on your back, with your eyes closed, the breath moving gently in and out of your body, this is peace.

Thoughts still flicker to life in your mind, but they don't have the same importance as they did before you started. If they are needed again, they will return. Corpse pose is about finding complete stillness, about listening to your breath and accepting your heart beat.

Ultimate personal time, it is a pose in which nothing matters, except the absolute comfort of the body lying on a soft surface. Even if there is no sleep coming any time soon, this state of mind will rest you. You can stay suspended here for as long as you like, or slowly get up and crawl into bed.

Yoga is defined by transformation of the self. Traditionally in the west, it has been about twisting into pretzels or being able to do shoulder stands. It turns yoga into a competition which doesn't help put you to sleep.

The sleepy kind transforms your mind as well as your body. It takes away the struggle and clears the path to an easy breezy sleep.

Don't resign to staring at the ceiling shrouded in darkness forever. Not when you can do the simplest poses for a few minutes at bedtime and crawl between the covers ready for dreamland.

You can learn to focus your physical and mental energy more effectively and thereby be more vital, creative, and efficient in all your activities. Because when you focus your attention on breathing and moving your body in space, you are more focused in the moment. The key to getting the best out of each pose is to focus not only on your body and positioning, but also on your breathing.

Your Body Flexibility And Strength

The Mindful Breathing Involved With Yoga

The way you breathe is most important while working on the mat. A gentle yoga class is a very basic yoga class which focuses on the relaxation aspect of yoga practices. The practice of yoga involves stretching the body and forming different poses, while breathing slow and controlled. Each class ends with a quiet relaxation, meditation, and pranayama practice. Restorative yoga is a gentler style of yoga and focuses on muscle relaxation and a steady-state breath. Vinyasa yoga is a flowing style of yoga where movements are taken with the breath. Whichever way you practice, focusing on your breath is key to get the most out of yoga and meditation. It is also one of the best ways to slow down and clear your mind of all the clutter going on inside and around you.

Working With Your Breath

The cobra pose opens your chest to let your lungs take in more air. Slowly lift your hips while your legs are firmly on the ground and push your chest up with your arms so your body starts to look like a cobra rising up. If pushing all the way up with your arms is too much, leave your elbows on the floor. Keep focusing on your breath as you do this. The key is to breathe deeply from the abdomen, getting as much fresh air as possible in your lungs. If you were to put your hand on your stomach, it should move in and out as you inhale and exhale. As you breathe the air in, allow your stomach, back, sides, and rib cage to expand. As you breathe in and out through your nose, slowing your breathing pace, you should feel your stomach expanding and flattening. Don't breathe too fast or you might get to feeling light headed! Remember, you are doing controlled breathing.

Release Of Built-up Tension And Stress

There are various stress-relieving exercises which can really contribute to reduce tension and stress. Though all stress is not bad, there is good stress, which can help you get things done, and there is bad stress which causes physical and emotional distress and damage. A deep inhalation followed by a long, slow exhalation is an effective way to begin releasing stress and tension. As you may already know, yoga is a great way to de-stress and reduce anxiety. Exercise is crucial for relieving stress, even if yoga is not something you want to try. You can smile during yoga, and even laugh, which is a great stress reliever too. Laughing yoga anyone?

The Lower Body And The Blood Circulation

In Bikram yoga, the heated room promotes sweating which helps rid toxins from the body while loosening and stretching the muscles to prevent injuries. Water flushes unwanted toxins from your body and keeps your brain sharp. When the body relaxes the intestines relax and better help to let the body release toxins and waste matter. Pranayama allows the entire body to get oxygenated and burns out toxins from cells. By making the body work more efficiently, Japanese Yoga will help prevent injuries as well as heal and rehabilitate existing ones. All will help with relieving stress during and for some time after.

A Common Way To Deal With Stress

Yoga helps deal with physiological and psychological effects with a greater sense of peace and acceptance. Practicing yoga helps with losing weight, makes you stress-free and helps you meet other resolutions too. Many psychological diseases can be treated with the regular practice of yoga. Patients with physical limitations can benefit from yoga breathing alone. Stress is a major contributing factor to aging and is a guaranteed to make you age faster. Stress also has been known to be a contributing factor for many other diseases. Augment sounds with mental images of stress being washed or blown away and you should be able to better handle day to day stress and the pressure it puts on your body and mind.

At Least 10 To 20 Minutes A Day

A quick way to help you manage stress is once you wake up you should stand for a few minutes then lie down on your back and close your eyes. To practice pranayama, at first, you might want to sit cross legged against a wall or lay on your back so you are comfortable. At the end of the set, relax, lying on your back with your eyes closed for 5-20 minutes. With the first breath, you say 10 to yourself, with the next breath, you say nine, and so on. You can close your eyes and visualize yourself at your favorite vacation place. Usually at the end of every yoga session, especially Hatha, you will spend about five to ten minutes in deep meditation.

We all have our own way of handling stress, but do we handle it well? Practicing yoga and meditation daily (several times a week at least) will give you tools to help you manage your stress much easier. As you continue to practice, you will get better and better at it. Namaste.

Yoga For Healing In Cancer And Other Illnesses

By Faye Martins

Since ancient times yogis have proclaimed the powers of yoga for healing illness and have prescribed different asanas to help with overall health of mind, body and soul. Now scientists are beginning to back up these claims with evidence that these positions can help not only to increase flexibility, but to reduce inflammation and pain.

Reducing Inflammation Can Help Overall in Healing Disease

In the largest study of yoga using biological measures to assess results, it was found that the meditative sun salutation and downward dog poses reduced inflammation. These results signaled good news, because, for instance, inflammation plays a large role in the fatigue experienced by cancer patients. Inflammation is also a part of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and arthritis.

Breast Cancer Survivors Showed Lower Inflammation in Practicing Yoga

In a study of 200 breast cancer survivors who had not practiced yoga previously, among the group who began to practice yoga, less fatigue and higher levels of vitality were found than in the control group. The study found that blood tests of three markers for inflammation were lower by fifteen percent than in the control group. Clearly yoga for healing worked in this case.

Western vs. Eastern Measures for Healing through Yoga?

Are studies the only markers for healing? Clearly not say yogis, who trace their tradition back 5,000 years. Eastern traditions measure health from a different perspective altogether. In fact, diagnosis is not made from the perspective of illness but from an overall diagnosis of wellness that looks at mental, spiritual and physical well-being. The tradition of yoga treats from a "seven-limb" perspective:

1. The first two limbs are the aspects of yama and niyama, or universal and individual guidelines for moral restraints. These provide yardsticks for daily behavior.

2. The third aspect or "limb" is the asana. These are guidelines for physical development.

3. Fourth comes pranayama, or the development of the breath. This is helpful for reduction of stress and improvement of pulmonary problems.

4. The fifth and sixth limbs, pratyhara and dharana, are simply described as turning inward and concentration.

5. The seventh limb, dhyana, is meditation.

6. The eighth or highest limb is samadhi, or bliss. Here one has attained total wellness on all levels.

So one can see that there is little comparison to wellness as it is described from a yogic perspective and the attainment of health or freedom from a particular illness as a western medical doctor might describe it. Wellness from a yogic perspective goes far beyond the western definition.

Western Studies Help in Acceptance of Alternative Treatments

To the yogi, there is no question that yoga can be used for healing in any situation. To the doctor trained in western medicine, proof is needed. For this purpose, quantifiable studies are indispensable in bringing "non-traditional" practices such as yoga to our hospitals and nursing facilities. As these studies continue, it is hoped that yoga will be incorporated into physical and occupational therapies to help patients cope with pain management, flexibility and stress reduction on a regular basis.

Yoga For Biking? How They Can Work Together

By Faye Martins

Bicycling is a great form of exercise. Cyclists are prone to injury though. Biking for long stretches can lead to soreness in your lower back and hips. Improper form can also cause tightness in your neck and shoulders. In addition, bicycling requires endurance. Without that endurance, a cyclist can tire easily. Yoga for biking can help you get the most out of your riding. Plus, they're both fun!

Firstly, it is important for bicyclists to prevent tightness in the neck and shoulders. Lengthening the spine will help with proper form. Having improper form can lead to long-term and short-term discomfort. Simply being aware of your spine can help a bicyclist. Moving your shoulders down and away from your ears will ease much of the tension. With improper form, many people put too much pressure on their wrists. Proper alignment and a stronger spine will cause less wrist pain. It will also lead to a stronger upper body. Bridge pose is an example of a great pose to work on for tightness in the neck and shoulders.

The lower part of your body also suffers when cycling. Many body parts become overdeveloped and tight. They overcompensate for weaker areas. It is important to lengthen those overdeveloped muscles by stretching. Strengthening your core in yoga can help your whole body work together and make you a stronger and safer bicyclist. It will also protect your lower back while cycling. Increased flexibility can help prevent major injury from a fall as well. One major issue bicyclists deal with is tight hips. Balancing out the hips will prevent lower back and pelvic injuries. Tight hips can also cause iliotibial band friction syndrome. Stretching out your hips will make your pedaling movements much more comfortable and quick! Pyramid pose and warrior one will be helpful for all of these issues, including core strength and hip flexibility. Pigeon pose is also a great way to stretch out.

A less obvious reason to practice yoga is the mindfulness it can help you achieve. You will become more aware of how your body is working what what needs to be adjusted. Yoga requires very thoughtful breathing, which can be so helpful when riding a bike too. More mindful breathing and thought will help in stressful situations, such as a race, especially. Mindfulness can help with endurance as well. Yoga can help improve your lung volumes and chest wall expansion. You may want to practice pranayama to improve your breath.

Yoga is an entire body and mind experience. To reach your full potential as a cyclist, trying new ways to improve can take you to that next level. Yoga incorporates so many of the issues that can come up when you are on a bike. Many studios actually have both cycling and yoga too! You can choose to do one or the other at any time. Many even have a cycling class followed by yoga class specifically for the cyclists. Whether you want to use yoga for strength, breathing, to relax, or all the above, it might be a great addition to your exercise regimen.

Individuals who wish to use this form of yoga to improve their mental and/or physical health should know that there are a variety of ways to get started. Here are three:

1. Group Classes

Group classes can be a great way to begin this form of yoga practice, especially if one is a beginner. Additionally, it's important to eat a balanced diet that contains a high volume of fruits and vegetables in order to attain the nutrients necessary for the body and mind to function properly. When combined, each of these activities will help promote the holistic, optimal health that makes life more productive and meaningful.

How To Use Yoga For Sciatica Pain

By Faye Martins

As many health experts know, sciatica can be a painful condition to grapple with. This results from the fact that the sciatic nerves (which are the longest nerves in the human body) run from the base of the spine, through the muscles of the buttocks, and down the backs of both legs. When the sciatic nerves are impinged, they can cause great discomfort that ranges from a shooting pain down the back of the legs to throbbing in either of the buttocks. In many cases, sciatica sufferers also experience weakness, tingling, and numbness. Nevertheless, fitness experts now know that sufferers can use yoga for sciatica pain in a way that results in a substantive decrease in the symptoms. Here are several yoga positions that can be used to alleviate sciatica pain:

Modified Boat With Block

This yoga pose can be particularly beneficial for individuals with lumbar-spine related sciatica, and it works by strengthening the deep core muscles in order to stabilize the lower back. Additionally, it helps realign the pelvis by working the adductors (inner thighs). To perform the modified boat with block, individuals should sit evenly on their sitting bones and position a foam yoga block between the shins. At this point, the knees should be bent at a 90 degree angle. While lifting the legs, engage the deep core to prevent arching of the back. Hold the position for five deep breaths, lower legs, and repeat the entire exercise. Ideally, participants should build up to holding ten deep breaths.

Bridge With Knees Together

This pose will help sciatica sufferers whether their pain originates in the piriformis muscle of the buttocks or the low back. To perform the movement, get on all fours and begin from the bridge position. The knees and feet should be together. Next, inhale and raise your hips so that they are diagonally aligned with the knees and shoulders. Do not arch the lower back. Hold the position for three breaths and then release down for one breath. Repeat the position three times. This pose is effective in strengthening the lower back while also opening up the hip flexors.

Seated Twist Variation

This yoga move is a mid-back rotating twist that stretches the piriformis. To perform the movement correctly, be sure to use caution and avoid incorrect twisting that could worsen any existing disc issues. To work effectively, the twisting motion needs to start at the mid-back and between the participant's shoulder blades. To start, sit up straight with the legs out. Cross the leg that is causing pain over the opposite leg and then press the sole of the foot down. Hug the opposite arm around the knee and place the other hand on the mat behind the hip. Draw the leg toward the chest, rotating from the mid back. Exhale as you perform the movement and hold the position for three deep breaths.

Conclusion

Although the set of yoga moves for sciatica listed above certainly isn't exhaustive, it does provide readers with a basic understanding of several restful exercises that can be utilized to alleviate the pain associated with the condition. In addition to practicing the aforementioned exercises, individuals who want to alleviate sciatica pain should exercise consistently, eat a balanced diet, drink sufficient quantities of water, and eliminate stress in their life. In so doing, the pain resulting from sciatica will diminish substantively and-in some cases-be eliminated entirely.
