Strategies For Designing A Yoga Lesson Plan

By Faye Martins

As many yoga instructors know, being orderly and systematic about the world of yoga instruction is one of the most effective ways to make the teaching process excellent and expedient. With this idea in mind, teachers who are seeking to optimize the classes they teach should know that designing a yoga lesson plan is a great way to realize this goal. In some cases, instructors find that they have never created a detailed outline for what their class will cover. As a result, they feel they don't know where or how to start the process. To get the ball rolling, implement the following four strategies:

1. Start.

This is typically the most challenging step in the process of designing a great outline for all of the topics and exercises to be covered in the class. Instructors procrastinate about this initial activity for several reasons, including the fact that getting started can seem overwhelming. Yet the only way to avoid procrastinating about the outline is to actually get started. There are several strategies one can implement to get the ball rolling, such as going online and looking at sample lesson plans there for inspiration and ideas. Additionally, instructors can break the lesson outline into sections, and work on a couple of components here and there until the entire plan is finished.

2. Be Specific.

In order to create an exceptional, effective outline, the information found therein should be highly specific. For example, the outline should include detailed information regarding things like whether the instructor will teach from the front or back of the classroom. If students will be required to bring things such as their own towels or water bottles, this information should also be listed. Specific class outlines make the best outlines because they provide the instructor with a clear direction to take the class.

3. Show The Lesson Plan To The Boss.

This strategy for the outline design is effective and important for many reasons. First, showing the outline to one's boss ensures that each aspect of the teaching process is in compliance with the business's rules and regulations. Second, showing the outline to the boss is a great way for an instructor to demonstrate a commitment to using organizational and time management skills in the professional work setting.

4. Sleep On It.

The first outline that a yoga instructor devises is just that-the first outline. As a draft, it shouldn't be viewed as the final copy that will be used to give structure and direction to the classroom setting. Instead, the instructor should step away from the outline-or "sleep on it" for a while. In returning to review it, the instructor will be able to analyze the document with fresh eyes and insights. This will help optimize the plan so that unnecessary, irrelevant inclusions can be eliminated.

Conclusion

Yoga instructors who want to excel at work should note that the creation and use of an outline can help them realize this objective. However, it is important to note that the outline needs to be highly organized and specific in order to truly help instructors bring order and structure to their classrooms. To ensure that a yoga lesson plan conforms to these structural characteristics, be sure to implement some or all of the tips and tricks outlined above. In so doing, instructors can expect to experience profound success in their chosen field.
